German-based organization ‘Rafaels’ has issued 10m/- to help stop female genital mutilation (FGM) activities in Mkinga District, Tanga Region. The funds will help among other things to start projects that will offer alternative income generating activities.
The fund has been channelled through a Tanga based NGO known as Tanga Inter African Committee (TIAC) which deals with educating against FGM. According to group’s chairperson, Imelda Hyera, about 24 ex-circumcisers have surrendered their tools.
She said the best way that could help them was to establish a permanent and sustainable project that would help generate income. The group has opted for the construction of a hotel to be operated in collaboration with stakeholders.
"These people were depending on FGM to get money… if we don't give them another income generating activity they may resume the practice…” she warned.
She praised the efforts by TIAC who have been educating the villagers since 2000.
The chairperson asked district leaders to provide them with required support in order to build a strong cooperative project that will benefit the entire community.
